Tramaco has added a new conductive functional coating, the DJIC-AS01, to its product portfolio. This water- and IPA-based system is based on a water-dispersible polyester-polyurethane and the conductive polymer complex PEDOT:PSS. It is intended for applications in which electrostatic charging must be reduced and dissipated in a controlled manner without significantly altering the component’s appearance.
The coating is primarily aimed at manufacturers and processors of electronic packaging, technical films, protective covers, machine covers, and other components designed to protect sensitive electronic components. Based on current test data, the product is classified as ESD-dissipative.
Conductivity controllable via layer thickness
The conductive effect is created by a network of PEDOT:PSS in the dried coating film. The polyurethane matrix provides film formation, adhesion, and flexibility. According to the available sample data, electrical conductivity increases with increasing coating thickness. Surface resistances of approximately 10^7 ohms per square at 13.7 µm, approximately 10⁶.³ ohms per square at 22.8 µm, and about 10⁵.⁸ ohms per square at a dry film thickness of 32.0 µm.
This allows the achievable surface resistance to be tailored to the specific application through application, dilution, drying, and the resulting dry film thickness. Generally, a higher film thickness results in lower surface resistance, while thinner films can allow for higher transparency.
Substrates and Coating Architecture
Tramaco lists PET, PVC, glass, and pretreated polyolefins such as PE and PP as possible substrates. Depending on the substrate and requirements, a multi-layer structure may be appropriate, such as one involving pretreatment or an adhesion primer, the DJIC-AS01 functional layer, and, if necessary, a very thin protective layer.
Applications include ESD-protective packaging such as trays, blister packs, films, and component containers. Other applications include transparent plastic parts, viewing windows, protective covers, and machine enclosures, as well as technical film coatings and thin conductive layers on glass and transparent protective surfaces.
Application-Specific Testing Recommended
Before mass production, Tramaco recommends conducting a defined paint and coating test on the intended substrate. In addition to surface resistance, the evaluation should focus in particular on transparency, adhesion, abrasion and scratch resistance, resistance to water and cleaning agents, as well as behavior after aging and under varying humidity conditions. “For many applications, DJIC-AS01 is initially suitable as a separate functional layer,” the product description states. Direct use as an additive in any paint system should only occur after testing its miscibility and the effects on the conductive network.
With the launch of DJIC-AS01, Tramaco is expanding its range of functional coating solutions for industrial applications. Samples and further technical information are available from the company.
