The participants of the first laboratory workshop of the Association for the Surface Finishing of Aluminium e.V. expanded their knowledge of anodizing in practical exercises.

Whether layer thickness measurement, Clarke test or corrosion testing: at the first laboratory workshop of the Association for the Surface Finishing of Aluminum e. V. (VOA) from 16 to 17.09.2024, the participants were right in the middle of it instead of just being there. Divided into groups, they carried out various laboratory and measurement techniques under professional guidance and thus expanded their insight into the subject matter. The VOA and the fem Research Institute in Schwäbisch Gmünd, where the workshop took place, deliberately focused on the anodizers this time. The successful premiere will now be followed by a second workshop aimed at the coaters of aluminum surfaces.

Focus on practical work

In its first laboratory workshop, the VOA placed emphasis on conveying theoretical and technical content and a strong focus on practical work. The fact that both experienced practitioners and inquisitive beginners were present proved to be a great advantage. "The fact that we were able to welcome people with very different fields of activity in the respective companies and therefore also with different levels of knowledge resulted in a very fruitful exchange. This was perfect, because in the VOA network we want to share our knowledge with each other and constantly improve the quality of surface-finished aluminum products together, so we are very pleased with the successful workshop," says VOA Managing Director Dr. Alexa A. Becker.

Insight into QUALANOD requirements

In the area of quality management, the laboratory workshop also covered test equipment monitoring and the requirements for anodized aluminium in accordance with the international QUALANOD quality mark. In addition, the participants were given an insight into the practical experience of the fem research institute with regard to the unannounced QUALANOD inspections that take place twice a year, through which managing directors and plant managers can gain security and save costs by avoiding warranty claims.

Further workshops planned

The VOA is currently planning its events for the coming year, including the first laboratory workshop for coaters in spring 2025. The association will announce the invitation and program at www.voa.de and on social media.
