Reactsurf 2490 is a new APE-free polymerizable surfactant developed as a primary emulsifier for acrylic, vinyl acrylic and styrene acrylic latex systems. It improves emulsion performance. Compared to conventional surfactants, it offers superior functional and aesthetic benefits in exterior coatings and pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), even at high temperatures, according to the manufacturer.
"Exterior coatings and pressure-sensitive adhesives are both susceptible to surfactant leaching," says Janice Ng, business development manager, Coatings Asia Pacific. For exterior coatings exposed to harsh environments, leaching leads to dirt pickup and water staining, while for PSAs it leads to water whitening. Reactsurf 2490 prevents surfactant migration, which improves the resistance of PSAs to water whitening and the resistance of exterior coatings to dirt pickup. This means that products with clear labels retain their original appearance and exterior surfaces remain clean and dirt-free.
