Nowadays, a large number of components are shot peened in a wide variety of industries. Shot peening processes are used in the automotive industry, aerospace, medical technology and many other branches of industry to significantly improve the fatigue strength and therefore the service life of dynamically stressed components. However, checking these is very time-consuming and is therefore not usually integrated into production.
The reproducibility of shot peening processes can be monitored using the three quality parameters of abrasive properties, intensity and coverage. However, none of the aforementioned quality parameters provide direct information about the expected fatigue strength of the finished component. This must be determined by time-consuming test series.
