The Oellers paint factory in Aldenhoven is working with the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences (HSNR) and the machine manufacturer 3WIN to develop processes for producing bio-based functional substances for corrosion protection coatings. The aim is to partially replace fossil raw materials with agricultural residues.
The research projects "P-REx" and "BioPhosCoat" focus on the extraction of phytic acid from pig manure. Enzymatic processes are used to extract the phosphorus contained in the manure and make it usable as a functional component for binder systems. Various modifications of phytic acid are currently being tested in the company's own laboratory to determine their suitability for corrosion protection applications.
Corrosion protection with bio-based components
Phosphorus-containing compounds play a central role in coating systems for adhesion and corrosion resistance. By using agricultural by-products, part of this function is to be provided on a bio-based basis in the future. It is crucial that the technical properties – in particular protective effect and durability – remain comparable to conventional systems.
The projects are funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the federal government. As part of an innovation trip, North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister of Economic Affairs, Mona Neubaur, visited the site to find out about the status of the project.
Continuous focus on sustainable raw materials
According to its own statements, Oellers has been increasingly focusing on renewable raw materials, such as plant-based alkyd resins or fatty acids, for several years. The current research work complements this strategy with the material use of agricultural residues.
The company develops and produces paints, varnishes, and coatings for industrial and craft applications at its Aldenhoven site.
