The new coating is a TiAlN-based multilayer structure that is applied using arc PVD. The manufacturer specifies the coating hardness HIT as 42 (± 2) GPa and the residual stress as -3 (± 1) GPa. The maximum application temperature is approximately 1,100 °C, the process temperature is below 500 °C.
A stable manufacturing process with long tool life, reliability, consistent performance and precise holes is crucial for productivity and cost efficiency. In comparative tests with a Tier 1 automotive supplier, the new PVD coating achieved an average 89% longer tool life compared to previous coatings, according to the supplier. In individual applications, reconditioned drills coated with Balinit Optura even achieved a longer service life than new tools with a complex double coating.
The new coating proved to be more reliable compared to market-leading coatings - across the entire spectrum from low-alloy, heat-treatable and case-hardening steels to various types of cast iron. With an average performance increase of more than 50% compared to predecessor and competitor coatings, the coating has proven itself under real production conditions in many steel and cast iron materials and machining scenarios. The coating structure enables longer tool life and up to 33 % lower production costs.
