The approximately six meter high winding tower in front of the Veltins-Arena was erected as a visible symbol of the tradition and future of FC Schalke 04. A duplex system consisting of hot-dip galvanizing and subsequent powder coating was used for corrosion protection. This combination combines basic cathodic protection with a resistant paint coating. For operators, this generally means longer maintenance intervals and a stable appearance - important for heavily frequented locations and exposed components.
Relevance for surface technology
Duplex systems are considered a robust solution in infrastructure and architectural applications where mechanical stress, moisture and road salt are to be expected. The pre-treatment of the galvanized surface (including suitable cleaning/activation) and a coordinated powder coating formulation are crucial for adhesion and edge coverage. The project thus offers a practical reference case for municipal and industrial outdoor facilities.
Process tips
For comparable projects, companies should document the zinc coating quality (e.g. uniform coating thickness, surface purity), the compatibility of the powder system and compliance with the relevant process windows. Test combinations consisting of adhesive pull, cross-cut and salt spray/condensation water change tests are recommended in order to provide reliable evidence of the service life expectancy.
