Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles achieves high coating quality with rotational dip coating system

Abstract

Maximum flexibility is required, especially for the commercial vehicle sector. The new generation of the VarioShuttle rotational dip coating system enables model-specific rotation curves and guarantees a high coating quality for all body variants.

Pre-treatment (VBH) and cataphoretic dip coating (KTL) form the cornerstone of the complex painting process in automotive painting. Nuances such as the paths of the car bodies through the baths are decisive for a high-quality coating. The conveyor systems used for this purpose must therefore be customised in terms of system throughput and workpiece geometry. The Böblingen-based company Eisenmann GmbH therefore offers a variety of conveyor systems for VBH and KTL. These include Power & Free systems, simple pendulum conveyors and electric overhead conveyors, but above all the flexible E-Shuttle 200, E-Shuttle 300 and VarioShuttle rotary immersion systems. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles uses the VarioShuttle XL. It enables the bodies to be rotated during the dipping process and can transport the bodies through the process tanks at any angle.

After 28 years of operation, Volkswagen has completely modernised the paint shop: in addition to pre-treatment (VBH) with eleven pre-treatment tanks and cathodic dip painting (CDP), this also includes dryers and ancillary equipment, such as for waste water management. In the new paint shop, Eisenmann's conveyor technology ensures that the car bodies run safely and efficiently through the surface treatment process. During development, the focus was on combining proven technologies with the latest new and further developments, which together ensure a very high level of availability. In the new system at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, it is possible to adjust the dip curve as required at any time, with simulation and process control playing a key role. Model-optimised, individual rotation curves can now also be run. This process guarantees the highest coating quality for all body variants
