OptiSense: Large parts - precise coatings
Abstract
Giga Coating GmbH coats components weighing up to nine tonnes in Twist using a CDP line and two powder coating systems. The parts come from all over Europe and the order volume is around 1.5 million square metres per year. Quality control and thus compliance with minimum coating thicknesses, but also the avoidance of overcoating, therefore play a central role.

The coating systems from Giga-Coating GmbH are designed for extremely large components. Giga-Coating coats large medical devices, vehicle components and special projects in XXL format for its customers. The challenge in coating lorry swap bodies, including the platform floor and chequer plate, lies not only in the size of the components, but also in the exact coating thickness. If this is too thin, there is a risk of corrosion damage. If the powder coating is too thick, the paint layer flakes off easily, which can also lead to corrosion.
At GigaCoating, the coating thickness is measured using a photothermal coating thickness gauge. It is non-contact, fast and efficient. With this technology, a very high process stability can be achieved and the resulting reproducibility of the coating quality is at the highest level. The smallest corners can be easily reached with the measuring head and spot-measured even on the narrowest weld seam. The coating quality has increased significantly because undercoating can be avoided as far as possible.
