Flexible design of illuminated surfaces from Silcos

Abstract

A flexible light guide made of highly transparent silicone opens up new possibilities for product designers and developers when designing ambient lighting, adaptive user interfaces and backlit components.

How do you produce a homogeneously luminous surface with a construction depth of only five millimetres, which adapts three-dimensionally to a basic body, can be individually designed in terms of surface and shape, and at the same time meets the highest requirements in terms of appearance, haptics and function?

Silcos GmbH developed a silicone solution that fulfils all these properties. The lighting itself is based on modern LED technology and is housed on a circuit board outside the lighting field. To ensure that the light is available over the entire length, a highly transparent, also flexible light guide, made of a clear high-performance silicone, sits inside Siloptics Flexilight.

The application scenarios of Flexilight are enormous - from space-saving, wide-area backlighting to the implementation of disappearing effects or day/night design.
