The future and chrome (VI)

Now that ECHA has come around to the first major upstream authorisation of chromium(VI) three years after the sunset date, the associated requirements are anything but easy to fulfil. In addition, there is worrying news coming from Brussels.

Not only the timely performance of the measurements is a challenge, but also the elaboration of the exposure scenarios and the derivation of the measurement tasks have to be done first. There are no detailed ECHA guidelines for this, as use-specific considerations have to be taken into account in each plant. For larger electroplating plants in particular, which have a certain routine in dealing with such topics within the framework of the Major Accidents Ordinance, this may not yet seem so dramatic - for smaller electroplating plants, on the other hand, which have hardly dealt with the topic so far, the challenge is likely to become much greater.
