DFO: What zinc coatings don't like

Abstract

Lack of adhesion of galvanised coatings not only affects organic coatings, but often the underlying inorganic coatings, as shown by three different cases in which DFO Service GmbH determined the cause.

A sendzimir galvanised surface, the organic coating of a galvanised component and a peeling galvanisation - three different surface faults that can all be traced back to defects during the galvanising process. As different as the application examples are, as clear is the cause of the defect.

In the first example, the defect was in the edge area of the polyester powder coated component. In the second case, the organic coating of a galvanised component, which was already in outdoor use, came off. In the third case, a SEM image showed that the coating had also come off here. By means of SEM and EDX analysis, DFO Service GmbH was able to determine different defects during the galvanising process in each case.
